Current Projects 2008 to 2009.

Befriending

As we grow older it is easy to feel isolated or that we can't make a positive difference to our lives. The project aims to value and support elderly people by offering companionship, sharing memories, encouraging a positive outlook on life and promoting physical and mental well-being.

Clothes Bank

Clothes bank collects good condition clothes for children from 0 years to 2 years in age. It then allows other parents to select items from those collected to use for their babies free of charge.

Community Champions

Helping people to deal with statutory or goverment agencies, by accompanying them to interviews, writing letters or making phone calls.

Community Computers

Project Partners: Lowestoft College
Project Funders: Original grant from Suffolk Single Gateway, SAVO.

We are available to offer support to individuals who feel they don't have confidence in operating a PC, those who want to learn about the basics, find out how to use the internet and e-mail or have a desire to learn some item of software in more detail. We are planning with our partners to offer free courses on IT in the near future.

DreamworX

Project Partners: St. Andrews Church of England
Project Funders: FairShares, Help an East Coast Child, Extended Schools

It is a street based youth project aimed at 8-13 year olds in North Lowestoft. The project is non-stigmatising aiming at the young people as individuals and based on need rather than ethnic origin or other labels.

Dyslexia Support Group

We assess children (and adults) for dyslexia and help people with statementing and tribunal problems. Session: First Wednesday every month between 1.30pm to 3.00pm at Signpost Gunton.

Fantasy Football League

This fun project has been running for several years now and has been successful in contacting male members of the community. Although the league is in no way exclusive it was started by the positive dads group Signpost used to run. If your are interested in joining in for next season please contact us below. A small fee is expected for the league to help pay for the paperwork and prizes.

Food Co-op

An opportunity to buy fresh vegetables, fruit and salad. The bulk buying by the co-operative allows a variety of fresh seasonal items to be shared with those who want to take part, at a reasonable price. Bags of vegetables must be ordered the week before they are needed. The vegetables are supplied by the mobile shop on a Friday morning and sorted and packed at Signpost before being transfered to the Tenant's Hall for afternoon collection. Opening hours are 1.30pm to 2.30pm every Friday at the Tenants Hall (Hollingsworth Road).

Friday Coffee Bar

Open house for coffee and tea. Also to come and share fellowship. During the time the coffee bar is open various other activities take place such as the mobile vegetable shop.

A periodical event where people can bring items they have finished with and want no money for. Those same people or others can take home other items brought to the Give and Take events.

Gunton Community Park

We are a group of local people who are committed to working in a professional way to see the transformation of a neglected playing field into a Community Park that will be exciting, healthy, safe and environmentally friendly open space at the heart of our community; a park that will be enjoyed by all ages.

Gunton Partnership

Our aim is to bring together organisations and groups living or working on the Gunton Estate to identify and address the needs of the whole community. To promote pride in the community and to champion the estate. To co-ordinate community activities on the Gunton Estate.

Life Coaching

Lunch Club

An opportunity to meet people and enjoy a meal provided by the volunteers at Signpost. This usually occurs once a month. There is a small charge to pay for the food.

Parent and Toddler Group

The parent and toddler group has been running sucessfully now for many years. They meet on a Wednesday morning between 10 am and 12 noon. Pocket Allotments

Re-mind

We all have good days and bad days: sunshine and shadows. We can't eliminate the bad days but we can help one another to prolong the periods between the bad days: more sunshine, less shadow. Our aim is to support and remind one another of the simple steps that can help lengthen the period of sunny days. Re-mind will provide information, support groups, activities and life coaching.

Web Portal

The intention of this project is to draw in all parts of the community to create a web portal full of up to date information. Local topics of interest, historical, environmental, community related and for all ages. The information on the site will be creatred by those who live and work in the community.

Woodlands Area

Project Partners: Waveney District Council, Friends of Gunton Community Park, Green Light Trust, Suffolk Constabulary, Suffolk Wildlife Trust.
Project Funders: Heritage Lottery Fund, Waveney District Council, local area forum funding.

The plan is to develop a new woodland and conservation area for the community to enjoy for generations to come. Local schools are already involved and will be part of the planting of trees and plants, which is due to take place in Oct / Nov. Local Historian Ian Robb will be producing a community history information leaflet to inform local people and visitors of the heritage of the Gunton area.
